What to Bring to Your First Binder Session

Your first visit goes faster when you arrive with the right documents — and when you know what can stay at home.

Bring These

  • Property registry extracts (certified copies preferred)
  • Vehicle registration certificates
  • Active insurance policies (property, vehicle, life)
  • Bullion or precious metal purchase receipts
  • Safe deposit box rental agreements
  • Any power of attorney or guardianship documents

Leave These at Home (Unless Specifically Relevant)

  • Photographs and personal letters
  • Expired policies more than five years old (unless tied to an active claim)
  • Utility bills (unless documenting a commercial property)
  • Bank passbooks (we document asset ownership, not account balances)

Copies vs. Originals

You decide what goes in the binder. Many families place certified copies in the binder and keep originals in a safe deposit box. We note both locations on the index.

If you are unsure whether a document matters, bring it. Sorting is part of the session.

Physical Preparation

Documents arrive best in a folder or envelope — not loose in a shopping bag. If papers are damp or mouldy from closet storage, let us know beforehand so we can prepare appropriate sleeves.

Allow four uninterrupted hours. Bring reading glasses if you use them. We provide tea and a quiet consultation room.
